SSWC number 2

one of the benifits of doing this write up over a week later is that I start remembering things I may have missed while “racing”…its all coming back to me now….

Race day came way too early on saturday morning thanks to the night before,  and to say I wasn’t feeling 100% would be a bit of an understatement. I decided just to treat it like a big group ride and it is exactly how it went down. Fast guys went to the front and guys that thought they were fast tried to hang on. We paraded down main street Durango and it looked like this, It was impressive seeing 1000 riders rolling down the street and not a single derailer amongst them. Thats enough to bring a tear to a glass eye. as the race hit the dirt i could look up and see the lead moto abot 3 miles away and doing some quick trigonometry told me that they were really far ahead. I didn’t make it too far past the first “feed station” which looked like this:feed

I would say about 100 people didn’t make it past that point. I took it upon myself to keep all the racers hydrated as they went by and to heckle the douchebags that were taking this way too seriously.
Greg Herbold
came through with a vintage tioga disc wheel.

Ned Overend came through in the top 5 wearing a dress…not bad for an 90 year old man

The Real Rob was more than happy to stop and have a drink with me then chase after the little gold number to his left

The after party kicked off over at Ska Brewery. There was a baketball game to decide where next year’s party…i mean race, was going to go down. New Zealand is the place to be. they also put on display all the entry forms for this year’s event. which was a coloring contests DSC_0120-1

Good times were had by all, with good food, great beers,  tattoos were given to the winners, and bands made guys do this.

The guys of the D9 Crew put on one hell of an event. It was a badass time and you should have been there.

In the mean time you can get over to Bump In The Night if you are anywhere near NY.

SSWC part 1

Last week I set out for Durango, Colorado for the Singlespeed World Championships and a pretty cool road trip was born. as usual, pictures and words won’t do it justice, but I will give it a shot.

Leaving Tempe at 8pm on a Wednesday night and motor up to Flagstaff for the night where we met up with Mandlebar and The Real Rob at an 80′s dance party. I am now convinced  that every road trip should start with a dance party. It was  a slow start the next morning, but all the troops were rounded up and we proceeded to stare at the open road for hours…

res road

We made our way to Cortez, CO and broke up the drive with a badass ride at Phil’s World. If you are ever in the 4 corners area, make it a point to ride these trails. Miles of singletrack with banked turns and rolling terrain. Pure fun.

We rolled into Durango and thats when things started to get blurry…This was my 3rd Singlespeed worlds andit was hands down the most rowdy of  them all. The pre party was fueled by about a million kegs of free  New Belgium beer and tacos..I have a few pictures and not a lot of words.

There was a dirt jump contest and some kid from Kingston, NY won and we were stoked stoked

  There was art…there was art

there was a hipster, acid rock band from San Francisco… band

I let some little guy punch me in the head…

there were even bikes growing on trees…

Ride Fast. Live Slow.

When I was 20 years old I lived with fellow BLK13′er Jimmy in the lovely city of Rochester, NY. One day I stole his cassette tape of AVAIL’s Dixie album.  Karma being what it is, it got stuck in the tape deck of my Oldsmobile and it was the only thing I could listen to for about 3 months. Here at the Blk13, we are shaped by bikes and music. The two things go together like peanut butter and jelly, or booze and strippers…and we wouldn’t have it any other way. That tape getting stuck gave me a new appreciation of the lyrics of that particular band and I am still a fan a decade later. In a way I got lucky, it could have been one of T.M.’s Christina Aguilera’s albums. But that’s a story for another day.

Coming up this month for me is Single Speed World Championships in Durango, CO and then straight to Interbike.  I will have full reports from both(maybe).

In the mean time, throw on some tunes, go for a ride and enjoy the last days of summer. Ride Fast. Live Slow.
